At the Hoteiya, like at the Seikai, we had dinner at the hotel (which was part of why the package was so damn expensive). Now, before I start all my raving, let me first rant about the absence of child meals. Out of all that was sold at the hotel, my sister only managed to eat the sashimi, the rice, and a few other things. 😦

Dinner was served in-room both nights, and while the most memorable night was the second night, the first night was also pretty awesome.

The hotel we would stay at for the fourth and fifth nights were very hard to decide. I actually wanted to stay at the ANA Crowne Plaza Kumamoto New Sky, since I also wanted to acquaint with IHG (and cross off two hotel chains in one trip). However my mother wanted to stay near Aso, and wanted us (me and my sister) to experience the ryokan life my mom and dad had visited some 20 years ago.

I really wanted to stay at the Irifune Aso, which looked modern while cultural.

However the Irifune Aso was out for the nights, and TripAdvisor #1 ryokan Sozankyo wasn’t nearly as nice as we’d hoped (apparently HK$1000 per person doesn’t seem like high quality to my dad)

Disclosure: Apologies, but part of why this post took so long is because my WiFi suddenly slowed down. While it used to take 5 seconds to load a picture, it now takes 1-2 minutes. I have no idea why and am looking into it. Thanks for your patience!

Update: WiFi fixed. 😀

The food at both ryokans I stayed in were phenomenal. That said, I wanted to provide a food critic’s view of the food as well as a traveler’s view of it (i.e. amazingly awesome). Well, this installment is mostly for the pictures since if I added it to the rest of the hotel report, it could jam your computer (due to the amount of pictures).

All three restaurants (including the two that I tried) at Seikai Beppu were available for dinner. For the first night I tried Gen, Seikai’s signature restaurant, and the second night I tried Eitaro, Seikai’s seafood restaurant. Both delivered.

We ate at Eitaro both mornings (as it was the only restaurant available for breakfast).

The first night at Gen, we were served by a Chinese lady. She was nice, but it turned out sometimes she was describing the dishes wrong, so points gone for that.

While hotel choices in Yufu and Fukuoka weren’t that easy, the Seikai Beppu was a no brainer for us. First of all, a friend had stayed and strongly recommendeded, and second of all, it was rated the best Beppu hotel on TripAdvisor, so we were attracted immediately.

Seikai Beppu L Room Details

During peak season with our restaurant choices, it was HK$2700 (US$348) per PERSON. While that was super pricey, at least my sister had a child discount (HK$1800 only), and the prices turned out to be worth it.

Booking was through the hotel email, and I can’t screenshot it (I wasn’t the one who booked the property), but I can tell you that their English was pretty much flawless.

I was really excited about this property as well as the Hoteiya…

For the next night, as we decided to use the night and the next morning to explore Florence, we chose the Style Florence. Both the St. Regis and the Westin were out for my dates, so I chose the Style as it was selling at ~HK$1,800, which is more than generous for a suite and looked pretty nice.

My stay at The Style Florence

Expecting a more modern hotel than the Villa Franceschi, we departed Venice (or rather, Mira) in the late afternoon.

While the Style Florence isn’t a hotel you’d expect to have a glamorous entrance, I’ll still say this is the most hidden hotel entrance I’ve seen. I almost missed it. Did Hans Brinker help the hotel design the entrance? I kid…
