Disclosure: Apologies, but part of why this post took so long is because my WiFi suddenly slowed down. While it used to take 5 seconds to load a picture, it now takes 1-2 minutes. I have no idea why and am looking into it. Thanks for your patience!

Update: WiFi fixed. 😀

The food at both ryokans I stayed in were phenomenal. That said, I wanted to provide a food critic’s view of the food as well as a traveler’s view of it (i.e. amazingly awesome). Well, this installment is mostly for the pictures since if I added it to the rest of the hotel report, it could jam your computer (due to the amount of pictures).

All three restaurants (including the two that I tried) at Seikai Beppu were available for dinner. For the first night I tried Gen, Seikai’s signature restaurant, and the second night I tried Eitaro, Seikai’s seafood restaurant. Both delivered.

We ate at Eitaro both mornings (as it was the only restaurant available for breakfast).

The first night at Gen, we were served by a Chinese lady. She was nice, but it turned out sometimes she was describing the dishes wrong, so points gone for that.

Well, the English definitely wasn’t great.

Anyway, for a hotel the food was spectacular, but I feel like reviewing the food from a restaurant perspective as well as the hotel perspective. Don’t get me wrong, the food was gourmet quality, but I wanted to review it from that perspective anyway (well, it’s not worthy of three Michelin stars, but I want to see if the Michelin company would read this and give them two).

Seikai Beppu Gen Aperitif

I had a Coke, which was presented with nice glassware.

The meal began with tofu, which was flavourful and the dates balanced out the sweetness.

It was then followed by an appetizer quintet, which had seafood jelly, peppers and three other small pieces of food. Spectacular tasting, though not identifiable.

It was then followed by fresh sashimi – it’s not like there’s anything to be done, it all depends on the quality of the sashimi itself –  but it was tasty.

I liked the “sponged” turnip as much as the sashimi itself.

Cutlassfish soon followed, which was smooth and also flavourful. With the sauce it was spectacular, and definitely not based on starch (though I think there was a touch of umami – somewhat natural derived MSG – in it too).

The frozen soup noodles was one of the highlights of the meal, and the soup instantly melted in your mouth, becoming a nice soba broth. Nothing special about the broth, but it was tasty.

From now I’m kind of wasting your time (basically, all food was nice at least and spectacular at best), so I’ll just post the pictures and comment on those that were actually special.

It was pretty evident that the ice cream was homemade (though don’t trust me, I have a pretty bad palate).

Overall, a spectacular thirteen-course meal that brought me back to my room full (but not entirely so that I had to release it from the front end as well).

Breakfast was less memorable (but still really tasty).

Some items seemed more Vietnamese than Japanese…hey, I’m not complaining…

On the day of departure, we had breakfast as well at Eitaro. The onsen eggs were heavenly.

Seaweed was served in antiseptic like packages (and tasted great).

We also had dinner the second night at Eitaro, which was on the level of that at Gen, if not better.

The sashimi was fresh and high quality. Always the highlight of the meal… 😛

I got a Ginger Ale. Phenomenal (though definitely bottled and not homemade). I think it was Wilkinsons branded (which I saw again in the lounge…get to that later).

It’s worth noting that the hot towels were really refreshing and had a scent that I had never experienced in Hong Kong, and really liked.

Overall a flawless dining experience at Seikai Beppu. I just wish it were a tenth as pricey…
